A Singing Waiter Gig
A singing waiter gig is something that can be hit or miss from my experience. Most of the time, the guests manage to figure what is going on and then the undercover waiters are not a surprise. Thankfully, this was not the case for Operatico’s singing waiter job on June 26 in Cambridge. In fact this was a triumphant success due the expertise acting of Lawrence Thackeray who dropped a tray of cutlery and fell over with such a bang that even we – his fellow colleagues- were uncertain if he had really fallen over and hurt himself.
The Operatico Quartet: Undercover Waiting Staff Turned Performers
We were booked as a quartet to perform at a corporate party as undercover waiting staff who were supposed to surprise the guests at their dinner by party by bursting into song and who were not suppose to do any waiting but just walk about a little and look the part. I think this information skipped the head waiter who had us pouring water and clearing some tables! Regardless, we did our best to be as convincing as possible and when the time came to perform our 25 minute set we were ready! Cambridge Venue and Performance Preparation
On arrival we were shown around the venue in Cambridge which was situated by big gardens and a lake and the weather was perfect so the guests were all outside enjoying themselves. For this gig we performed: O Sole Mio, Let Me Entertain You, That’s Amore, Nessun Dorma, My Way, Funiculi Funicula. We had a short sound check and then we were able to rehearse in a hotel room which we were given. We discussed how we would lead into our performance keeping it a surprise and finally decided that Lawrence would create a ‘bang’ by dropping cutlery on the floor and acting very apologetic. We did not realise he would also throw himself on the floor also so convincingly. Has he had stunt training?!
Performance Highlights: Nessun Dorma and My Way
Nessun Dorma and My Way were the highlights of the concert as people took out their phones to record us and shine their lights, some people sang along and others even began to become emotional. The power of music always surprises me and I hope it continues that way. The organiser of the event was so pleased that she took all our details and said she would hire us again and we had a continuous round of applause from the guests.
